Bandung, 01 June 2024, The English Department held a course field work which has become an annual program. In this year, the course field work took place at the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics and the Wayang Museum, Kota Tua, West Jakarta on May 29th, 2024. This practicum aims to provide opportunities for students to test and apply the knowledge they have learned. This practicum was participated by 4th semester students who were divided into 2 sessions, the students visited the Wayang Museum first, then they continued to visit the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics. This course field work activity was attended by 234 students, 38 lecturers, 5 staff, and 6 instructors.

In this series of activities, students are given the freedom to explore every corner of Kota Tua, from its historic alleys to its bustling markets. Accompanied by the experienced lecturers, they not only received insights into the history and tradition of Kota Tua, had interaction with the artworks, and gained awareness of cultural preservation, but they were also invited to experience daily life in Kota Tua and understand the social dynamics that exist there. This experience provided a new and deep perspective on Indonesia’s cultural diversity and its rich history.

Moreover, students are given the opportunity to develop their creativity through creative writing and essays. In addition, students can create digital content, such as vlogs of their trips. This task not only trains their writing and video production skills but also introduces visual communication skills that are highly relevant in today’s digital era. This practicum is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and real practice, preparing the students for the challenges of the professional world in an innovative and fun way.

As said by the Head of English Department Study Program, Dr. Andang Saehu, M.P.D..
“Students will explore and observe what they see, feel, touch, examine, and learn in Kota Tua, especially the Puppet Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics, as their material in creative writing and essays. By exploring those museums, students are assigned to write poems, prose, and essays in English that will be collected and then made into an ISBN book. In addition, students can also make tiktok videos, long-duration videos for YouTube, and press releases for the English Department website.”

Throughout this event, the English Department hopes it can motivate students to continue to innovate, explore their talents, and enrich their insights into the vital role of literature and culture in shaping human identity and civilization. In this way, students are expected to become pioneers in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, as well as strengthen intercultural ties in the future.
